My Giant Colouring Book: Jake and Dinos Chapman

My Giant Colouring Book: Jake and Dinos Chapman

The Chapman brothers drew their responses to the colouring book pages onto mylar sheets, which were then transferred through a light-sensitive process on to the plates. The resulting images, all - ironically - monochrome, are dense, hallucinatory improvisations that subvert the apparent innocence of the original illustrations. They are rich in art-historical allusions, from medieval images of hell and damnation to Picasso, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Paul McCarthy’s assaults on icons of folk culture. The prints offer a brilliant introduction to the imaginations of two of Britain’s most inventive and subversive artists.

The exhibition is part of Hayward Touring-a contemporary art organisation producing exhibitions that tour to galleries, museums and other publicly-funded venues throughout Britain. They collaborate with artists, independent curators, writers and partner institutions to develop and tour imaginative exhibitions that are seen by approximately half a million people in over 100 cities and towns each year.

Cockington Craft centre welcomes this part of the tour which will have kicked off its 2012 tour at the V&A Museum of Childhood.
