BATS Brixham Arts and Theatre S Brixham Arts and Theatre Society

BATS Launch Day, 22nd May.

Spring is here at last and Brixham people are turning to the future with confidence. On the first of April, the day-to-day control of the Brixham Theatre complex, for a two-year trial period, became the responsibility of Brixham Arts and Theatre Society (BATS to you!). This team of enthusiasts will be making sure that the Theatre and Scala Hall are used as much as possible, with additional productions taking place in the Theatre and more activities in the Hall, soon to be modified to provide an Inquiry and Booking Office, and a less draughty entrance!

To celebrate this considerable concession by the Council, BATS will be holding a Launch Day on 22nd May, starting on the previous evening with a popular music concert. ‘The Room Upstairs’ will again be entertaining us with all that’s best from our talented youth groups, organised by James Wade.
Then Saturday starts with a bang as Brixham explodes to a spectacle of street entertainment, children’s theatre, art workshops and exhibitions featuring local dance and theatre groups, including the ever-popular “Brixham Berzerkers”.

The official opening of the Launch day will be at 11.00am in The Scala Hall, with the up-and-coming star of Radio Devon, Jo Loosemore, officiating.

In the afternoon there will be a “Showcase of Talent”, with local singers and poets in the Lounge. Maggie Duffy will be charming us with her folk songs, poems and anecdotes of Brixham, while Donna-Marie Hughes, the international opera singer, will regale us with a selection of popular arias. ‘Poetry for Pleasure’, the Brixham group, will provide interludes with well-chosen verses, including an all-comers open mic session.

The evening is brought to a spectacular conclusion with the well known function band “High Society”, playing from their large repertoire of dance and ‘easy-listening’ music in The Scala Hall. With a bar and lots of space to ‘strut your stuff’, the day will, we hope, be the first of many enjoyable occasions organised by BATS for the people of Brixham!
